NHS Health at Work April e-bulletin

Dear Colleagues/Board members/Shriti_Pattani

I am delighted to be given the opportunity to be Chair of the Network. A huge thank you to Anne for all her hard work and commitment to the Network over the last 6 years, she will be missed. Anne will be taking over as President of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine from October and we wish her every success and look forward to working closely with her and the Faculty to promote Occupational Health in the NHS at a national level.

My vision as Chair for the Network is that we benefit from the many opportunities currently arising at a national level for Occupational Health, in particular from the Green Paper consultation on Work, Health and Disability. There has been a huge response to the consultation which is good news and the results are expected in the summer. There is an appetite to produce evidence on the benefits of an Occupational Health Service particularly in the NHS and there are several pieces of ongoing work in this area which will be shared with the Network when the results are available.

A membership and workforce survey will be undertaken this year to ensure the Network is working to address the pressing issues faced by our members and some of the results will be available by the time of our annual conference. Last year’s annual conference received excellent feedback and I look forward to seeing many of you at the conference again this year in September.

Among the many items featured in this edition include the publication of new toolkits by Public Health England for employers on mental health, suicide and musculoskeletal health. There are also details of several training opportunities at reduced cost for network members.

Finally can I request that those who have not renewed their membership for 2017/18 do so as soon as possible.

1. Network Board changes and vacancies

We are pleased to confirm that Dr Shriti Pattani, Clinical Director at London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, has taken on the role of Network Chair with effect from 1st April 2017. Shriti has been Deputy Chair since July 2016, effecting a smooth transition into her new role. She can be contacted via shritipattani@nhs.net.

The Board expressed their gratitude to Dr Anne de Bono at her last meeting as Chair. Under Anne’s leadership the Network has established itself as the representative voice for all NHS occupational health teams in England, playing a significant role in influencing national and government policy.

We also welcome Dr Charles Goss, as the new representative for the East Midlands. Dr Goss is a Consultant Occupational Physician at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and a member of the Trent Occupational Physicians group. He also works closely with nursing colleagues in the region and can be contracted via charles.goss@uhl-tr.nhs.uk.

London vacancy

Following Dr Ali Hashtorudi’s end of term after six years of unstinting support to the Network Board as the London representative, the deadline for applicants has been extended to Tuesday 18th April. An application form is available here, or contact admin@nhshealthatwork.co.uk.

South East Coast vacancy

We were sorry to receive Dr Jane Hitchins’ resignation from her role as South East Coast representative and are now seeking applications for a replacement. 2. NHS Health at Work Network membership renewals

Renewals for 2017/18 are progressing well, with over 60% having confirmed their renewals.

If you haven’t responded yet please remember that you have until 30th April to secure the early rate of £650 (compared to £850 for the full rate). If you have any queries please contact admin@nhshealthatwork.co.uk.

3. NHS Network Membership Benefits

NHS Network Discount on: Legal experience training - 7/8th September 2017

Legal Experience Training offer 5% off their Essential Legal Skills for Occupational Health Professionals course fees for NHS Health At Work Network members. Their next course will run on the 7 and 8 September 2017 in London.

In addition, on booking places, one of two additional discounts is also currently available. Legal Experience Training are offering a 15% discount on course fees when booking and payment is made before the 26 May 2017, or 15% off for each delegate, when two colleagues book together.

4. MoHaWK

Our final MoHaWK workshop takes place today (5th April) in Leeds.

The workshops have been very well received and we are considering running a final event in the summer if there is sufficient interest. The venue will be in either Birmingham or London. If you would like to register your interest then please email wendy.coleman@sygentis.co.uk.

The workshops are available to all OH teams (NHS, public sector or commercial) and are free of charge.

Timing of future rounds

Just a reminder that the timing for Round 11 has been changed as a result of feedback from users. Data entry will be in July (based on June data). Round 12 will be in February 2018 (based on January data).

5. PHE ‘One You’ campaign

Public Health England (PHE) launched their evidence based national campaign ‘One You’ in March.

A range of new resources are available:

  • One You physical activity campaign resources for the public campaign.
  • Order the One You employer toolkit that supports workplace initiatives. A password is required when clicking on this link. This is ‘walkatwork17’and is case sensitive.
  • Encourage staff to promote the Active 10 app for themselves and brisk walk for at least 10 minutes a day: available via Apple/iTunes or Google Play

6. Reducing the risk of suicide – new toolkit launched

Public Health England (PHE), Business in the Community (BITC) and the Samaritans have joined forces to produce the following toolkits for employers. This coincides with the publication of data from the Office of National Statistics, identifying the groups at highest risk.

The toolkits help employers take action around suicide prevention and support them when responding to the death of an employee caused by suicide. They include advice on steps employers can take to help their teams and providing them with the tools and support they need to prevent suicides. 

The toolkits form a suite of interconnected toolkits alongside the already published:

7. Mary Seacole Programme

Applications are now open for the Mary Seacole Programme. This is a six month leadership development programme which was designed by the NHS Leadership Academy in partnership with global experts, the Hay Group, to develop knowledge and skills in leadership and management.
 
The Mary Seacole programme is for first time leaders in healthcare, or those aspiring to their first formal leadership role.

Closing date for applications for Cohort 31 – London: 18 April 2017
Closing date for applications for Cohort 32 – Liverpool: 9 May 2017

8. Research on occupational mental health in the NHS – OH practitioners wanted

Dr Jennifer Oates, a lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at King’s College London, is undertaking a qualitative research study on occupational mental health provision in mental health trusts, specifically the extent to which occupational health practitioners are equipped to support mental health practitioners who also have mental health service needs. She would like to talk to OH practitioners who provide a service in mental health trusts.

9. British Nutrition Week

The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) Healthy Eating Week takes place on 12-16 June 2017.  The Week has been running for a number of years and last year had 6,922 organisations registered to take part (reaching over 3.1 million people)!
 
The Week is open to all nurseries, schools, universities and workplaces in the UK and its purpose is to provide a dedicated week in the year where the UK can come together to focus on healthy eating and drinking, and physical activity, in order to encourage healthy living. The Week is an excellent opportunity to build on your organisation’s health initiatives.
 
Five health challenges are at the heart of BNF Healthy Eating Week: Have Breakfast; Have 5 A Day; Drink plenty; Get active; and Try something new and all registrants will receive lots of resources and information to help meet the challenges.

10. FOHN update

Having completed the first 2 key milestones in its work programme, the Faculty of Occupational Nursing (FOHN) is looking for new members to join its development group. More information is available here.

11. Royal College of Physicians’- Mission Health

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has recently published ‘Against the odds: experiences from the NHS front line’, which explains the demands and difficulties for healthcare staff in the NHS.

This is part of their Mission Health campaign, which calls on the Government to address the issues facing the NHS. The first report ‘Underfunded. Underdoctored. Overstretched. The NHS in 2016’ was published last September.

12. Network ‘ask a question’

Just a couple of queries were circulated in March on biological monitoring for cytotoxic drugs and administration of immunoglobin.

13. Flu - End of season uptake figures and 2017 conference

The latest figures show a new record high, with a total 618,275 healthcare workers vaccinated against flu this season, which equates to 63.4 per cent of frontline staff.

Philip Dunne, Minister of State for Health, and Nicola Blackwood, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health and Innovation, have written a letter thanking flu teams for all their hard work in promoting the flu vaccine in healthcare workers.  

Flu fighter conference 2017

This free conference will take place on 24th May at Horizon Leeds. Places are limited to 2 delegates per NHS Trust and you can register here.  The agenda includes defining what frontline staff are, peer vaccinator training and creating professional looking videos with limited budgets.

Health and wellbeing webinar: Stress in the workplace

You can listen to this recent webinar, which featured Paula Brockwell from Robertson Cooper talking about stress and Dr Anne De Bono, Chair of the NHS Health at Work Network, talking about stress from an occupational health perspective.

Vital signs: eight elements of workplace wellbeing

A new poster and web section is available to show the eight elements that are critical to delivering a robust and effective health and wellbeing offer for your staff. They should not be focused on in isolation, but all need to be in place in order to ensure your wellbeing strategy is as effective as possible. For example, interventions without communication or leadership will not have the desired impact to help create a healthy culture in your organisation.

Get involved in Race for Life

Race for Life brings millions of women together to support life-saving research. There is a range of events, including 5k,10k or Pretty Muddy, an obstacle course that sees women of all abilities crawl through tunnels, bounce on space hoppers and slip down mudslides.  Race for Life would be a great way to engage your staff in the Five Ways to wellbeing, offering an opportunity to connect, be active and give.

Macmillan Cancer Support Resources

The cancer support resource webpage has been updated to include four revised Macmillan Cancer Support tools and guides that may help you support employees who may be caring for a loved one with cancer. 

Public Health England Wider Determinants of Health

Public Health England has launched their Wider Determinants of Health Fingertips Tool to help improve population health and reduce health inequalities.

Diagnostic tool for stress level assessment

Mint Diagnostics are currently developing a stress diagnostic test with elite sport organisations and are starting to plan the development and validation of their technology also for corporate health and wellbeing. The April/May 2017 edition is now available on the website


The NHS Health at Work Network brings together all OH teams providing health and wellbeing services to NHS OH staff.  It is dedicated to providing consistent, high quality health at work services to all NHS staff through collaborative working.

Members of OH teams in NHS Health at Work Network member organisations can receive the bulletin and access the restricted areas of the website as a membership benefit – if you are not sure of your login details email admin@nhshealthatwork.co.uk. Please share this bulletin with colleagues and encourage them to register to receive it regularly. Non-Network members can also register to receive the monthly bulletin.
