Spring has officially started and I hope you are all safe following our spell of bad weather.

It has been a busy start to the new year. The Network was approached by Public Health England to be involved with drafting a recovery plan to manage the reintroduction of Hepatits B vaccine, which was circulated recently and is available below.  

I was pleased to be invited to a working group set up by the GMC on managing doctors with long-term health conditions and support for medical students. The opportunity to participate in such work allows the  Network to influence future guidance.

The next board meeting is on 15th March and we will be finalising our business plan. It will then be available to all our members.

1. Network membership renewals

Thanks to all members who have confirmed their intention to renew their membership for 2018/19. If you have not done so already you have until the end of April to benefit from the early bird rate of £670 (instead of the full rate of £870). If you have any queries about renewing your membership or joining the Network, please contact admin@nhshealthatwork.co.uk.

Membership is available to all NHS OH teams in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales (plus other organisations associated with the NHS – see the Constitution for full details). If you are not currently a member but are interested in joining us please get in touch for more information. Benefits of Network membership include:

2. MoHaWK – Have you reviewed your Round 12 results?

For those services that entered data into Round 12 – it’s now time to start reviewing your results and comparing to previous rounds and other services.
To do this log onto the 'Report' tab (from the options on the left hand side of the homepage).

This takes you to the Reports page (as shown below) - choose the report format that you want (the most comprehensive is the Round report).   You can click on the headings beow to take you directly to each report area.


There are several different report styles that you can pull from the system which can be helpful to you.
Organisational Comparison - this report allows you to compare the results of your service with those who have entered data in the indicators for that round. A graph is shown with your service in green and all other services in blue
Organisational Progress  - this report allows you to compare the indicator data that your service has submitted against all the other Rounds that you have entered. This graph is really helpful in demonstrating to your service levels of improvement that has been attained or where you need to put further work into place.
Round Report – this report combines the comparison report with your services progress report. This is produced in a word document which enables you to personalise it with information on future action. It is a very helpful report to share with your teams or with your Board on the progress you are making.
Health Promotion Summary Report – this provides a summary of the health promotion data that you have entered in that round. 

Then consider what actions you need to take to improve (if required) before the next round. If you have any issues with obtaining the reports or want any guidance then please do contact hilary.winch@nnuh.nhs.uk.

3. Network Member discount (5% plus early booking discount) – Essential Legal Skills for OH Professionals

Legal Experience Training offer 5% off their Essential Legal Skills for Occupational Health Professionals course fees for NHS Health At Work Network members. Their next course will run on the 17th and 18th May 2018 in London. In addition, an early bird discount is also currently available when booking places. Legal Experience Training are offering a 15% discount on course fees when booking and payment is made before the 23 March 2018.

4. Network Member discount (£200 plus VAT) - Certificate in OH Case Management

6-8 June 2018, Central London

The At Work Partnership is delighted to offer NHS Health at Work Network members a discount of £200 + VAT for places on our Certificate in OH Case Management. This highly regarded, practical three-day qualification is designed to train occupational health and other professionals in the theory and practice of case management skills – in order to improve absence management, job retention and return-to-work outcomes.

5. PHE guidance on reintroduction of Hep B vaccine

PHE have issued a recovery plan to manage the reintroduction of Hep B vaccine and ensure a continuous supply through 2018. A copy has already been circulated to Network members and is available here.

6. NSOH – new online community space

The National School for OH have set up a community space on the popular application SLACK. This space provides a closed discussion forum for all those involved in Occupational Health Education and those with an interest in it and its future developments. You can pop by, contribute to the discussions, promote your initiatives around education, offer support or seek support with an educational issue.

There are a number of discussion channels to get the conversations started. There is also the functionality to establish some private channels in the future.
Channels created include:

  • Announcements – tell us about what’s happening in your area or a national piece of news that might be of interest to us (OH education/recruitment related)
  • ARCP feedback – share or seek feedback on the ARCP process, applicable mainly for Occupational Medicine education
  • Ask for support – Make a request to the community – such as looking for placement or supervisor support or help with achieving a clinical competency
  • Chitchat – a space for general chat and “how do you do’s?”
  • Clinical placement – make requests or suggestions for good placements
  • Good reads and events – share useful articles, blogs or events and say what you like about them
  • Shameless promotion – doing something that you are feeling proud of, promote it here and share the love.

7. Flu fighter update

January’s vaccination uptake figures released
The flu vaccination figures for January have been released by Public Health England. The overall uptake at this point is 67.6 per cent which is 4.6 per cent higher than this time last year.

We’ve received a record number of nominations for this year’s awards and have been blown away by the quality of your entries. Shortlisting is going to be a tough job! If you are successful in making the final shortlist, we'll let you know by mid-March so that you can arrange travel and accommodation for the awards ceremony, which will take place on the evening of Tuesday April 24th in Manchester.

Just a reminder that registration is still open for the flu fighter conference and spaces are filling up quickly!

Vaccine ordering for 2018-19 influenza season letter
NHS England and NHS Improvement have issued a letter advising that NHS providers should be planning to offer the quadrivalent vaccine for health care workers for the 2018/19 flu season as this is the most effective vaccine to protect the workforce and patients. The vaccinations must be ordered by the 29th March to meet demand. The letter is available on the website and we would recommend reading it.

7. NHS Employers Health and Wellbeing update

Health and Wellbeing Conference, 15 March 2018, Horizon, Leeds 
There is still time to book your free place at this conference focusing on mental health.  The day will be an opportunity for you to network with colleagues across the NHS and develop your own personal resilience session. More information on the event is available here.

Making Every Contact Count (MECC)
NHS Employers is working with Healthy London Partnership to step up making every Contact Count in London. Check out the free resources to plan, implement and evaluate MECC in your organisation. 

Public Health England’s Work as Health Outcome survey – have your say!
PHE’s Work as Health Outcome survey, is aimed at healthcare professionals (GPs, secondary care clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals) it aims to understand their attitudes, knowledge and practice on health and work. The survey is now live and closes 11th March 2018 .

Tackling Sickness Absence video
Take a look at our new video to hear how Ashley Judd, Deputy Director of Workforce, Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, worked with staff and unions to implement a new sickness absence policy, and the positive impact it has had by putting people before process. 

Headfirst Toolkit
Head first is a free digital mental wellness resource designed specifically for the ambulance service. Research indicates that 91 per cent of ambulance staff have experienced stress, low mood or anxiety while working in the service and this resource aims to support mental wellness, resilience and recovery. Whether you’re looking for self care, to share with a colleague or wish to find out more for your organisation, the head first tool is a great place to start.
Healthy and Safety Executive's Stress Indicator Tool
HSE’s new online Stress Indicator Tool (SIT) provides a quick and easy way to determine the extent to which work related stress is a problem in your organisation. The SIT features a survey of thirty five questions on key areas that, if not managed properly, are known to be potential causes of workplace stress. Take a look at an example online survey, an example autoreport and licensing costs. For a free demonstration or more information, please email productsupport@hsl.gsi.gov.uk.
