Public Health and the Responsibility Deal

Professor Lindsey Davies, President of the Faculty of Public Health, sets out the pivotal role of occupational health in public health in this video

The health and wellbeing of the UK working population is crucial to the health of society as a whole. Public health is the discipline concerned with analysing and improving health in populations - 'the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts of society'.

Public Health and the Responsibility Deal - Encourage your NHS Trust to sign up

The NHS Health at Work Network Board has signed up to the Public Health Responsibility Deal and is actively encouraging its members to do likewise.

The Public Health Responsibility Deal has been established to maximise the benefits to health and wellbeing by working in partnership through a series of networks and pledges for action. A core commitment is to actively support the workforce to lead healthier lives.

Encouraging your NHS Trust to sign up to the Public Health Responsibility Deal will reinforce the leadership role of occupational health in health and work and commit your organisation to the Health at Work pledges, including only using occupational health services which meet the new SEQOHS standards. Dr John Harrison, former Director of NHS Plus, outlines here why signing up to the Responsibility Deal is a ‘no brainer’.

More information on what signing up involves is available in the Department of Health's Public Health Responsibility Deal page.

NHS Health at Work has also produced a template paper for you to present to your Trust Board Director, to support sign up to the Responsibility Deal.
